So… Vegas
Before the Summer I’d been Considering how we can change something a little to make it visible, to obscure to make it stand out or connect with those around it….
Then I went to Vegas. This concept doesn’t work here. Everything becomes invisible with or without differences. Everything is bigger, louder, crazier. How would something stand out in a place like this?
But to do it to connect isn’t necessary, connection is easy here. It’s a place people go to to talk and meet strangers. Vast amounts of alcohol or drugs induce secrets and stories to be told across card tables or in bars.
Although some would say the people living on the street become in visible still, as in any other city. In Vegas those begging for money find new different ways to try and connect with someone. New placards that may make a drunk stranger laugh… So possibly give money. Honesty about their need. ‘I need money for beer/drugs’.
The extremes are everywhere in a place like Vegas, extreme wealth around some of the hotels, casinos, shops and art galleries. Extreme poverty around the city outside the casinos and in the areas outside of the strip. As a tourist you wander through all of this, you are bombarded with light, noise and people. People drop their inhibitions in a place like Vegas, as though it doesn’t matter there. Liberating. Yet also conforming to the expectations perhaps.
There is so much to consider and explore in a place like Vegas. As an artist, as a sociologist, as a feminist (sooooooo much to consider) and as someone who loves to party! Perhaps I will have to go back again to explore further 😉
I met a drummer while dancing on the street in Fremont st. His name was Stephen and I loved his coat. It was second hand so he let me photograph him for my alternative fashion blog.
